Andy Murray last played in Shanghai, and that will be it in Asia this year as the Brit withdrew from the 2023 Japan Open in Tokyo.
Andy Murray has had yet another up-and-down season as the British player found a really solid level at times but also disappointed more than once. It's simply the reality of his tennis career right now, as he's unable to play his best tennis regularly.
He'll do at times, but recently, he didn't have that much success. He only won one of his four matches played in East Asia. He's 32-17 on the year, which is a really good score, but it simply didn't work out in recent weeks.
Whether it's because of the fast conditions in Asia, which leave him vulnerable, or something else doesn't really matter that much. The conditions certainly don't help, as he lost to Aslan Karatsev, Alex de Minaur and Roman Safiullin, all players who like to play attacking tennis and for whom the conditions in Asia work well.
It seems like he's had enough of that as he withdrew from the Japan Open, returning early to Europe to prepare for the indoor season. He's had some good moments in these situations last year, so he likely wants to finish the season on a high note.
According to the available entry lists, Murray will play three more events until the end of the year. He'll play in Basel, which begins on October 21st. Then he'll play at the Paris Masters the following week and at the Davis Cup Finals in November after the ATP Finals conclude.
Skipping Tokyo makes sense because it will allow him plenty of time to prepare for these events, which are played in very different conditions to those in Asia and having time to fully prepare should benefit him.
