Carlos Alcaraz lost his 12-match winning streak as he was stunned at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome by qualifier Fabian Marozsan.
The 20-year-old Spaniard has been in a sensational form and that brought him the world no. 1 spot back. He will reach that on Monday but he won't celebrate that with a trophy from the Italian Open in Rome as he was stunned by a qualifier in the third round.
In the previous round, the Hungarian player stunned the 32nd-seeded Jiri Lehecka and he had another difficult clash ahead of him. Ahead of the match, Alcaraz said that he would like to meet Novak Djokovic in the 'iconic' final at Foro Italico, but that won't happen.
Marozsan started by facing a break point already in the first game, but he saved that and soon he had a chance to break himself. The Hungarian player used his only chance and that was enough for him to secure the first set, especially because of his incredible level.
He hit 12 winners in the first set and made only 2 unforced errors. On his serve, he won 89% of points after his first serve and thanks to that, Marozsan won the first set 6-3.
Yet, Alcaraz was expected to come back in the second set. But that didn't look as something that could happen. The Spaniard faced break points and he was even one break down.
But the world no. 2 managed to break back and take the second set into a tie-break. Alcaraz was up 4-1, but little did he know that it would be the last point that he won in the match.
Marozsan won the following six points to win the match 6-3, 7-6(4), and record the biggest win of his career. Up next, he will take on the 15th-seeded Borna Coric in an attempt to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event.
