Wozniacki Doesn't 'Feel Expectations' After Comeback & Plans To Improve At US Open

| by Evita Mueller

Caroline Wozniacki had a short stay at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, losing surprisingly in the WTA 1000 event's opening round against Varvara Gracheva.

The Danish player was initially scheduled to play Elina Svitolina in a bombastic round-one matchup, but it didn't happen as Svitolina pulled out before their match. The match never went ahead on Monday, getting pushed back to Tuesday because of rain.

It was a fair battle but not the best effort from Wozniacki, who was beaten in two sets by lucky loser Gracheva. The French player asserted her dominance in most rallies and crucially outplayed Wozniacki in the most important rallies.

The Dane was 0/9 on break points, and that's not good enough for the WTA Tour. After the match, Wozniacki was questioned about her expectations and revealed that she didn't have any. She believes in herself and will give it all to do as well as she can.

I believe in myself, and I believe that I can. Obviously it's just taking me a little bit of time just to get used to the matches again and competing in real tournaments (smiling).

But, you know, I don't really feel the expectations from everyone else. I think I have always just been, you know, tough on myself. I'm looking for perfection, which is not possible in this sport, but, you know, just gonna work hard and try and play better and better.

The Danish player never had any bold claims about her return. She mostly wanted to see if she could compete the way she thought she could. It hasn't quite come true so far, but the goal was always to try and do well at Grand Slams.

The final one of this year is coming up shortly so we'll see if she can genuinely peak at the event like she wanted to.
