Iga Swiatek is the defending champion at the US Open, and she's hoping to become a player who will successfully defend her US Open trophy.
Last year's campaign at the event finished in the best possible way for Iga Swiatek as she lifted a trophy. It was a great run that included wins over Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur, and she's hoping to do it again this year.
She was in great spirits during the Arthur Ashe Kids Day and confirmed being in a great mood by explaining that she's feeling a lot of good vibes compared to last year. The Pole did have a pretty decent run in the two WTA 1000 events, even though she left both of them empty-handed. There are some things that need to be finetuned, according to Swiatek, but all in all, it was a good experience.
Well, for sure I'm happy that I had time to practice a little bit more and to work on some technical stuff. But I'm really happy with my performance in Montreal and Cincinnati. I get more, like, positive vibes, for sure than before last year's tournament. But being the defending champion is not easy, so I'm kind of taking it easy, trying to do everything step by step.
Pressed further about how she feels about being the defending champion, Swiatek explained that it's certainly something entirely different compared to last year. A lot has changed in the past 12 months, so anything can happen, and there is also the added pressure of being the defending champion
Well, that's a tough question because on one hand you always want to kind of take experience from last year, find all these positive things that happened, take strength from that.
On the other hand you have to remember that it's totally different story. A lot can happen during like these 12 months. So I try to, yeah, take everything step by step, not really go forward with my thoughts, think that I need to do something more because last year I won.
