Swiatek's Father Opens Up About 'Harmful Comments' Because Of Iga's Ukraine Ribbon

Iga Swiatek has been playing with a ribbon in the colours of Ukraine since the war started, and recently it earned her criticism from some.

While her support for Ukraine has been widely praised, the Polish player recently caught some criticism for the move. It came after she lost to Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon, as revealed by her father in a recent interview. Swiatek has been quite open in her support for Ukraine, wanting the suffering to end.

She collaborated with fellow WTA pro Elina Svitolina on a charity event which caused was widely applauded in her native Poland and Ukraine as well. She addressed her reasons for supporting Ukraine earlier this year after the Qatar Open, admitting it has nothing to do with politics.

We should also support Ukrainians in everything that they are coping with everyday. It’s pretty disappointing that the situation is not changing but hopefully they will stay strong.

War for me is not about politics, but about people's suffering, and that is why I decided to speak out.

Her father spoke about her decision to do that and how it earned her some criticism recently following the loss to Svitolina.

It's her reflection. Playing with a ribbon on a hat, her views are clear – wants the war to end. Unfortunately, after the match with Elina Switolina, many negative comments appeared. It was harmful.

However, you cannot stand by such a topic as war. Iga has the right to her opinion. And she is consistent in this. The human harm that is not all who wants to talk about in Ukraine should be clear.

Despite the criticism, Swiatek won't stop wearing the ribbons as she promised to do so until the war ends. It's going to take a while, unfortunately, but her efforts and her stance should be applauded. Taking such a stance as the number one player in the world is necessary.
