Iga Swiatek has been an adamant supporter of the Ukrainian cause since the country was invaded by Russia last year.
She donated to the people of Ukraine a few times since the start of the war and set up a huge exhibition event with proceeds going to Ukraine as well. She spoke about it more than once admitting that it's a personal matter to her due to Ukraine and her native Poland sharing a border.
Her support has been quite vocal recently after she forced the WTA's hand to warn Potapova after she wore a Russian jersey to a tennis court. A small Ukraine flag pin on her hat has also been a staple in her outhit and will continue to do so as long as the war lasts.
She thanked me for supporting Ukraine, but she did it also before in Miami. It’s really nice and I really appreciate that.
Following her match against Tsurenko in Rome, the Ukrainian thanked Swiatek for her strong support during these tough times. They warmly embraced at the net and after the match, Swiatek once again pledged her support to Ukraine.
I think there’s nothing to kind of thank for because for me it’s pretty obvious that we should support Ukraine. I will do that until the war is going to end. But I know that they are in a tough situation, so I have a lot of empathy for all the Ukrainian players.
Her tennis on the court was sublimed as she seemingly bounced back well following her Madrid Open loss to Sabalenka. This is an event where she's been quite dominant in the past winning it both last year and the year before. She will contest a place in the quarter-finals later today.
