Swiatek Overcomes Double Rain Delay To Beat Muchova In Monteral

| by Evita Mueller

Similar to their match at Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek needed three sets to beat Karolina Muchova, but she won, and that's all that matters.

This is a matchup many wanted to see because the match we got at Roland Garros was truly something else. Muchova has been playing pretty well so far at the 2023 Canadian Open, so many assumed a close one, and they were right, at least outside of the first set.

The first one was actually the most dominant opening set Swiatek played at the event so far completely smashing her opponent. The score was 6-1 for the Polish player who controlled the match pretty well even though it wasn't that clean.

She faced four break points, so Muchova had chances, but she gave far too many to Swiatek on her own serve, and it proved her undoing. She also had too many mistakes, something Swiatek had to deal with in the second set.

As we pointed out in our preview earlier today Muchova needed to serve well because the second serve allowed Swiatek easy chances to attack and the number one seed used them. She won 9 of 13 of those points to easily cruise in the opening set.

The second set was a pretty crazy one between the players as we saw plenty of breaks as neither player managed to really fend off the attacks of the other. Muchova was the player that ultimately found a better rhythm overall taking the set and complicating things for the Polish player.

Despite the strong start from Swiatek, the Czech proved a tough matchup for Swiatek once more, something the number one recognized after their Roland Garros match. We should have gotten a great final set, but rain cut the momentum of Muchova completely.

We saw them play briefly after returning a few hours later, just enough for Swiatek to break but the match was suspended once more due to rain. The next return ultimately saw the match conclude, and it concluded with Swiatek finishing it off. The final score was 6-1 3-6 6-3 as she avoids losing to Muchova again.
