Swiatek Holds Onto No. 1 Spot As Rybakina Breaks Into Top 3 In Latest WTA Rankings

Iga Swiatek became world number one on April 4th, 2022, and she's yet to lose that ranking being number one after Roland Garros as well.

Becoming world number one was certainly a dream for Swiatek, one she thought impossible for quite a while. It finally happened last year and it was deserved, even though Ashleigh Barty's retirement made it a bit easier. She took it with her own merit winning multiple events in the early stages of 2022 confirming that rank by winning two grand slams later as well.

She's still the number one successfully defending her rank at Roland Garros. It wasn't something she was paying attention to very much wanting to win the trophy first and foremost. By doing that she remained the number one player in the world.

The most likely player to dethrone her, Aryna Sabalenka, remained as number two right now but the difference is only 900 points so the battle for the number one rank is not over yet. The Belarusian is a better grass player than Swiatek and has had better results at Wimbledon so we might see a new battle unfold on the grass of SW19.

Elena Rybakina finally made her way to the top 3 debuting her name next to the number 3 about a year after it was supposed to happen. The Kazakh player was supposed to break into the top last year following the Wimbledon triumph but the event was stripped of its points by the WTA in response to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players.

There haven't been too many changes in the top 10 besides that. You can check out all the changes on our dedicated WTA rankings page. Caroline Garcia moved up to number 4, Jabeur to number 6 while Pegula dropped to number 5 and Gauff dropped to number 7. Roland Garros breakout stars Beatriz Haddad Maia and Muchova moved up as well.

The Brazilian is now a top-10 player continuing her tremendous story. Karolina Muchova moved up 27 spots to number 16, a new career high for her. Last year's semi-finalist Martina Trevisan is among the biggest losers this week dropping 39 spots to number 69. Leylah Fernandez takes the cake though with a 46-spot drop to number 95.

Not even a full two years after her US Open final, Fernandez is on the verge of dropping out of the top 100. One of the biggest movers was Sara Sorribes Tormo who is 82nd following a jump of 50 spots. The top spot in that regard goes to rising star Elina Avanesyan also jumped 50+ spots (54) to number 80.
