'Stubborn' Gauff Admits She Was 'Reading Comments 10 Minutes' Before US Open Final

Coco Gauff is a very stubborn person, according to her words, and she fired herself up before the 2023 US Open final by reading comments from people who doubted her.

Gauff achieved the biggest success of her career by winning the US Open. It was the conclusion of a long journey that started over a decade ago and coming on native soil in front of family and friends only made it better.

It wasn't a foregone conclusion, though, especially as Aryna Sabalenka was the more experienced player who put together the better season up until that point. The Belarusian started well and looked in control, but Gauff proved stubborn, never giving up. She ultimately won the match, and it was a relief for her.

Oh, 100% a lot of relief. It's not the biggest emotion. I think it's honestly the smallest one, and I think that was what the difference was between French Open and now, I feel like the relief. Right now I'm just feeling happiness and a very, very small bit of relief.

As an avid social media user, Gauff was well aware of the talk surrounding her. She's embraced both the good and bad and just embraced herself as a stubborn person who wants to prove everyone wrong. She fired herself up by reading the comments about not winning before the match.

Yeah, I have just been embracing every positive and negative thing that's said about me. So I really told myself, literally up until, like, 10 minutes before the match, I was just reading comments of people saying I wasn't going to win today. That just put the fire in me.

Well, it worked out well for her as she won the trophy and proved the doubters wrong. She even referenced the naysayers in her post-match interview which probably felt really good. She deserves it, took control of the match, and won fair and square.
