Iga Swiatek advanced to the Roland Garros quarter-final once more getting very close to defending last year's trophy.
Iga Swiatek has proven herself to be dominant on clay once more with some amazing performances this year. Monday's one was heading in that direction as well but the match was cut short after Tsurenko experienced breathing difficulties and retired.
Despite a somewhat underwhelming clay season before Paris, Swiatek still entered the event as the number-one favourite and proved rather quickly why that was the case. Getting to the quarter-final isn't the goal, winning is, but it's an important step towards the goal of winning again. It's also something she's come to expect out of herself.
If I would have a quarterfinal of Wimbledon, I would be, like, over the moon and I couldn't believe that I'm in that place, you know (smiling). But I guess it depends. But in Roland Garros I always felt like, you know, I can do a lot.
Even on my first Grand Slam here I went to a fourth round. So I don't want to take this like for granted, because I know every tournament is a different story, and we all can kind of have really tough opponents even in the first or second round and struggle, because, as well, you know, the beginnings of the tournaments are sometimes tough.
A very tough next opponent is coming up for her as she'll face Coco Gauff in the next round. It's a matchup she dominated in the past but it's also one we saw in the final of last year's Roland Garros. She's the big favourite considering her track record at the event and she's feeling pretty confident admitting that getting into another quarter-final wasn't a surprise to her.
No, but I just feel pretty solid here. I'm happy that I'm ina the quarterfinal, and every year I'm gonna do my best to always, you know, reach these stages or even more so. Yeah. I don't know, like, if there was some breakthrough in my career that, I don't know, it stopped being a surprise, you know, but it also depends on the surface and tournament, I would say
