'Still Not At My Best': Rybakina Admits To Health Struggles At Wimbledon

Elena Rybakina is cruising through the Wimbledon draw and that's bad news for the rest of the field as she still doesn't consider herself fully fit.

It's been a few testing weeks for Elena Rybakina, especially those after Roland Garros. The Kazakhstani player arrived in Paris after winning the WTA 1000 trophy in Rome, determined to do well. She was very confident and it showed, but a disaster struck.

Midway through the event, Rybakina got sick which forced her to withdraw from the event. She tried to give it a go but after experiencing breathing issues in her warm-up, Rybakina opted to withdraw from the event. The recovery was a bit slow as it took her a few days to leave her hotel room and she's still not where she used to be.

The prep on grass was minimal as she lost early in Berlin and didn't play after that. Before Wimbledon, she also admitted that she was not feeling 100 % which was a bit worrisome to fans. That feeling is still there despite some very encouraging performances including the one over Boulter last night.

I'm feeling much better physically. Still I think not at my best. But also with every match I think I'm getting fitter.

Rybakina on her fitness

Viruses can be a tricky thing to fight off because the immunity might get depleted by the end of it. It leaves the body weakened and it takes some time to build up fitness again. Rybakina dealt with the typical muscle pains but is slowly getting there.

Yeah, after French Open, was not easy. Took me a long time. Also long time to do the fitness. It was not easy after the virus. Muscle pain and everything. So now it's getting just better.

She will need to be at her best because it's only going to get tougher from now on. She will face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the next round.
