Iga Swiatek had a really shaky start against Marketa Vondrousova at the 2023 WTA Finals, but she ultimately won the match in two sets.
Something similar to this happened at the Cincinnati Masters, where they played last time, and much like that match, this, too, ended with a win for the Polish player.
Vondrousova greatly troubled Swiatek in that match but ultimately lost the opening set in the tiebreak, and the same thing happened to her in Cancun at the 2023 WTA Finals.
Swiatek was just very erratic to start the match, totaling 15 unforced errors in just a few games of play. She would finish the opening set without committing much more and win it in the tie-break 7-3. She finished with 14 winners overall, much better than the five that Vondrousova had.
The second set opened with an early break for the Pole. By that time, she was fully in rhythm and had no issues with outplaying Vondrousova from the baseline. She is the better pure hitter than the Czech player and was expected to win this match comfortably.
Vondrousova tried to adjust in the second set by being more aggressive; however, it backfired in a spectacular way as she quickly racked up the unforced errors. She had nine after only 3 games, as the score showed 3-0 for Swiatek.
Vondrousova hasn't really played that well in the events before the WTA Finals, while Swiatek won the China Open, so this result isn't shocking in any way. The question mark was just how both would handle the court, which isn't the best per Sabalenka's description.
After some early struggles, Swiatek found her rhythm and from there it was an easy journey towards the finish line. The final score was 7-6(3) 6-0 as the world number two started off with a convincing win and a great showing.
