As per tradition, Maria Sharapova was spotted in New York at the 2023 US Open, and there is a very special reason for that.
Sharapova has spent much of her life in the United States, and while she calls Florida her home, she's in New York frequently, too. The Russian isn't playing anymore on the WTA Tour, having retired a few years ago, but she still keeps up with tennis.
Watching the new generation compete is something she enjoys, with personal favourites being Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Despite still keeping up with tennis, Sharapova has only ever been to one event in person since retiring. That event is the US Open, and it's not by chance. It's by choice, and she recently revealed why that is.
I love it. I love having an outsider's perspective. I love watching the new generations unfold, and the sport in general. In fact, I think the US Open is the only tennis event that I've been to in person since I retired. It's a really special one, with the energy of the crowds there.
She was there on opening day this year as well watching a few matches and will likely attend a few more in the coming days as well. The Russian is not an active player anymore but she's as busy as ever.
Shifting focus to her business career takes up most of her time, but as of last year, she's a mother as well. It's been one of the most amazing experiences for her. In the exclusive interview with People, Sharapova admitted that her son is starting to walk and talk, which is always exciting.
He just turned one, so it's the usual giggles, saying his first few words, and learning to wobble walk.
