'Not Trying To Fake Things': Gauff Clarifies Comments About Showing More Personality

Coco Gauff is enjoying life right now, especially after winning the biggest WTA trophy of her career at the 2023 Citi Open in Washington.

Coco Gauff admitted earlier this year that she needs to start playing attacking tennis if she wants to win more. She's been trying to do that after hiring a new coach, and for the first time in her career, it worked out. She bested Maria Sakkari to win the Citi Open in Washington.

It was a good event for her, one that saw her work with Brad Gilbert as a consultant as well. It's going to be interesting to observe whether she can keep this level up for the rest of the US Open series. Fans loved the new Gauff and she even talked about showing a bit more personality this week compared to previous weeks.

I guess in my past matches I was a little bit more animated. I just didn't feel like the moment. I'm not out here trying to fake things too.

I just didn't feel like I had to celebrate points off of unforced errors between one of us. So it wasn't like I was hitting winners a lot today. She's a tough person to try to get winners off of.

She didn't show much of that in this match being mostly focused on winning the match. It's only natural as she battled for the biggest trophy of her career. Wasn't the biggest final she played but still an important one to win and win she did.

I didn't really feel that need. Sometimes I did hit a winner, it was more like a let-go moment than a celebrate thing. Even match point, I thought I missed the ball. Yeah, I didn't hear the out call. So then I was, like, Okay, I won.
