Jabeur Under Fire From Israeli Officials After Showing Support To Palestine

by Sebastian Dahlman

Ons Jabeur is under fire from Israeli tennis officials after she showed support for Palestine in light of recent events in Israel.

There was a terrorist attack in Israel recently, leaving more than 1,000 people dead. The violent act received condemnation worldwide; however, what followed didn't receive much support either.

It's a very complex, ever-evolving situation, with many innocent people losing their lives. Jabeur spoke about it on social media, showing her support for the Palestinian people but condemning the violent attacks simultaneously.

The message didn't get approval from Israeli officials, who found it offensive because of how she framed it.

It's probably the most complex geopolitical situation in history, and it's very hard to speak on it without offending at least one of the parties or even both.

The situation has influenced even the tennis world, as the 2023 Tel Aviv Open had to be cancelled. Check out below what Jabeur wrote in light of the situation.

What Palestinians have been going through during the last 75 years is indescribable. What innocent civilians are going through is indescribable; no matter what their religion is, or what their origin is. Violence will never bring peace; I cannot stand with violence but I also cannot stand with people having their lands taken.

The remark isn't that controversial, but it will ruffle some feathers depending on how you view the whole matter. Israeli officials found it offensive and launched through the Israel Tennis Federation. Federation chairperson Avi Peretz issued a statement, which you can read below.

This tennis player incites and supports a murderous terrorist organization. We’re glad she’s in the minority compared to the sane athletes in the rest of the world. We strengthen the security and rescue forces (Isreli army), trust them to do the job and pray they return safely.

Israeli Tennis Federation chairperson Avi Pertz on Jabeur's comments

Because the player belongs to the WTA, they are the body responsible for handling the case. The association and the ITF are now waiting to see what measures they will take against her.
