Iga Swiatek hopes to finish off the year on a high note at the WTA Finals, and challenger number one is Marketa Vondrousova.
The Czech player had a surprisingly good year overall that saw her win her maiden Grand Slam. She contested a Grand Slam final before losing at Roland Garros a few years ago, but winning Wimbledon was the most shocking thing that happened on the WTA Tour.
She's not known as a grass player, and she expected a swift exit but went all of the way. That, coupled with other good performances, allowed her to book a spot at the WTA Finals, where she'll face Swiatek in the first match.
They played before with the Polish player winning all the matches. The two that happened a few years ago are not that important because things changed for both since then.
The one in Cincinnati this year is an interesting one to observe. Vondrousva jumped out to an early lead there but collapsed as the match went on, allowing Swiatek to win the opening set.
Once she did that, things went pretty well for her as she cruised in the second one. I think we might see something similar here because the last time we saw Swiatek play, she dominated at the China Open. The conditions are unfamiliar to both players, but I do think that she is much better at adjusting to that.
She is the superior player from the baseline, and I like the consistency in her game against the somewhat streaky Vondrousva. Vondrousova hasn't played in a month and didn't look great in Beijing, and I don't think she'll have a quick turnaround here.
Expect an interesting match but also one where Swiatek likely pulls out the win.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in two sets.
