Iga Swiatek said she cried after winning the 2023 China Open because she needed such a result to remain positive and motivated.
Iga Swiatek has endured a rather tricky season this year, failing to match her last year's achievements. It's not been a bad season, as Coco Gauff admitted that she'd love to have a season like Swiatek had this year. Even so, there have been a couple of bad weeks for the Polish player, who didn't win much in North America.
That's why this run in China was so important to her to sort of find her best tennis and regain confidence. She admitted as much after the match, explaining that she actually cried due to all of the emotions that flooded her after beating Samsonova.
I cried a little after winning because I know how hard it is to stay positive & stay focused on the future. Maybe not to all of them, but for me. I have felt immense support from my team in recent weeks. I am very grateful for that. During the match I didn't think about anything, I wanted to focus on tennis."
The run it self was an impressive one. While she might have had doubts about her level and motivation, she certainly looked very sure of what she was doing on the tennis court. She bested most of her opponents easily and faced very few challenges from any of them.
It's not what she imagined when she touched down in Beijing, especially after struggling the previous week in Tokyo. It also boosts her chances for the upcoming WTA Finals, where she'll be one of the favourites. It's a hugely important win for Swiatek; everything she said after the final proves that, especially the happy tears.
