'I Had Quite A Serious Injury': Swiatek Recalls Her Roland Garros Title Run

| by Evita Mueller

Iga Swiatek won the 2023 Roland Garros, but it almost didn't happen as she battled a serious injury prior to the event.

For the most part, Swiatek has been utterly spectacular at Roland Garros. She basically looked like the female version of Rafael Nadal in the way she dominated her opponents at the event.

That was impressive, but it was a bit different this year. She didn't quite dominate as much, at least as the event went on. She faced strong opposition from a few players, including Karolina Muchova, in the final.

It was a match that Muchova could have won and almost did win. She was up a break in the final set but couldn't quite hold it together due to a sickness.

Swiatek herself had physical problems even though it wasn't really noticeable. According to the Polish player, who spoke to Radio One’s Cezary Gurjew, she had a serious injury during the event, which is in line with what her coach said about the event as well.

At Roland Garros, not everything depended on me. I had quite a serious injury. I'm glad I managed to take part in it at all.

Her own coach admitted that this year's Roland Garros event was pretty complicated in many ways. Besides being clearly hampered physically, Swiatek also dealt with a lot of pressure from the outside, which made it tougher to win.

Ultimately, she did what she's been doing for much of this year, and that's to problem-solve. She solved the problems and won the event, finishing the year as number one. This upcoming one will be a huge test. She'll have two big events on those courts she loves.

Considering her track record, it almost seems like winning both is a must. She'll have to find her best tennis and also deal with the pressure that comes along with it.
