The winning streak battle in Montreal was won by Coco Gauff as the American produced another solid effort taking down reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
A matchup between two Top 10 ranked players is always going to be a good one, but it was certainly better with both of them having active winning streaks. Gauff's win over Boulter put her at five consecutive wins, while Vondrousova's win over Wozniacki put her at nine consecutive wins.
Both players were in high spirits as we saw a lot of competition. They traded early breaks, but Gauff quickly established herself as the dominant force giving Vondrousova a taste of her own medicine. The Czech player is a very precise player who is very good at defending and turning your power against you.
Coco Gauff does the thing, it's just that she does it on an even better level. The quickess and athleticism give her a big edge over most players and she used it well in this one. She was also a little bit better with her serve though not by much.
Overall both served poorly in the first set but it was a bigger issue for Gauff who couldn't do anything on her second serve. Even so, she won the opening set which was essential to calm the nerves and allow Gauff to cruise from there.
It was generally a tricky one for both with a late starting time due to a very long rain delay. Vondrousova seemed to be more affected by that generally Gauff has been showing an incredible level ever since she enlisted Brad Gilbert's help and there is a lot of excitement among her fans.
She's looking very much like one of the three best players in the world right now and she proved that with a comfortable cruise in the second set. The final score was 6-3 6-0 for the American as she moves on to face doubles partner Jessica Pegula.
