Emma Raducanu was forced to retire in her 1st round match against Bianca Andreescu due to back issues that arose in Madrid last week.

Raducanu spoke about the back issues before the event admitting that it was still troubling her but pointing out she is managing it. Asked if she was fine, her reply was that she was. Well, it seems like she is not fine as her play in this match suffered from the get-go. She won a few games to start as Andreescu needed some time to warm up but once she did she took over.

Down 5-2 Raducanu took an MTO off the court and upon return Andreescu finished off the set with 6-2. She was playing really well and even if Rauacnu was healthy she would have a very tough time in this matchup. The Brit opted to continue on initially but at 1-2 in the 2nd set, she elected to retire from the match cutting her Rome stay short.

She will probably take some time off to prepare for the French Open as back issues can be tricky to handle. It's the 2nd time she is having the issues after having them earlier in the year as well. Her body is so far not holding up well to the rigours of Tour life.
