Caroline Wozniacki ended her US Open run last night against Coco Gauff, but she'll leave encouraged by what she achieved.
To put into perspective how amazing Wozniacki's US Open run has been, let's say that she competed at the Legends event at Wimbledon not too long ago. A few weeks later, we saw her return with a win in Montreal at the WTA 1000 event, and she nearly ousted one of the best players right now to book a spot in the quarter-final.
Wozniacki was up a break early in the 3rd set but then lost six games in a row to crash out of the event. Say what you will about that final set, but even pushing Gauff that far was quite impressive and certainly shows that she can compete with the best.
I mean, yeah, I am encouraged. I think my game is pretty good. I think that I can beat anyone on any given day. I also believe if I'm not playing my best, I can also lose today.
The match was very close and competitive, with Wozniacki causing many problems for Gauff. She pushed the ball to the forehand, and it crumbled more than once. Wozniacki's problem was the serve, which was a bit lacklustre in this match.
My serve in the first and third sets let me down a little bit. I don't feel like I had the same pop as I had some of the other days. So that's something I'm going to work on. Maybe the ball here is a little bit heavier, so it sticks in your racquet a little bit more.
The bottom line persists, she overachieved compared to expectations and showed herself that she can still do this. With more playing time, Wozniacki could seriously challenge for some trophies.
There's a lot of positives to take with me going forward. I'm on the right track. I'm finding my form, I'm finding my feet. I know what I'm doing on the practice court is the right thing. So I'm excited to take on more events, more players out there
