Eugenie Bouchard seemed to be in a very good mood after her first-round win at the 2023 Madrid Open, but she wasn't so successful in round two.
After successfully navigating her way through the qualifying, the Canadian defeated Dayana Yastremska in the first round of the 2023 Madrid Open. After the match, Bouchard sparked controversy with her tweet, which read: "There's something about playing dopers in Madrid."
She soon regretted that and removed the tweet to focus on her second-round match at the WTA 1000 event in the Spanish capital, this time against the 18th-seeded Martina Trevisan from Italy who she lost to three years ago at the Australian Open.
This time, the two met on a different surface, but that didn't really help the Canadian. Bouchard started the match on a back foot, being broken in her first two service games. The Italian therefore easily created a 4-0 lead that Bouchard wanted to erase.
The 2014 Wimbledon finalist got off to a good start as she broke back and led 40-15 on her next service game, but she couldn't make it 4-3, and instead, Trevisan broke again and won the first set 6-2.
The Canadian faced a one-break deficit a few times also in the second set. While she managed to break back on the first two occasions, she couldn't respond after her Trevisan broke her serve in the eleventh game to win the match 6-2, 7-5 and advance to the third round.
Bouchard will now want to focus on the positives from her Madrid performance and prepare for the rest of the clay-court season. She should appear in Rome as well as the Roland Garros, as nothing is holding back the Canadian from fully launching her comeback.
