The event has been held every season since its inception in 1996, making the 2023 edition the 27th in its history; however, also the last one before the tournament was removed from the calendar.
Since its inception, the event has moved cities three times, as the first edition was held in New Delhi. The second edition was held in Chennai, where it remained until 2018 when it was moved to Pune.
It's usually held in the first week of January, allowing players a smooth transition towards Australia, where the first Grand Slam of the year, Australian Open, is held.
For sponsorship reasons, the tournament is also called the Maharashtra Open or Tata Open Maharashtra. Since 2018, when the event moved to Pune, it has been played at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex. Since 2009, the tournament was part of the ATP 250 category.
It was the preferred warm-up for Stan Wawrinka, who is the most successful player in the event's history, winning it four times. In the doubles, home legends Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes won the tournament five times together.
The list of singles winners includes several great players, such as legends like Carlos Moya and Ivan Ljubicic, as well as other successful players like Milos Raonic, Marin Cilic, and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Tallon Griekspoor won the 2023 edition in singles, while Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen won the doubles competition, which was the last edition of this tournament and the only Tour-level event held in India.
