The 2025
Geneva Open is scheduled for the same week as the
ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg, but that has not stopped several excellent players from being on the
entry list.
Despite being a 250-level event a week before the French Open at Roland Garros begins, from May 18th to 24th, the Geneva Open is still a popular event. Players are well looked after, and the experience takes place in a picturesque setting that makes it attractive to travel to.
Casper Ruud is the defending champion. The Norwegian defeated
Tomas Machac 7-5, 6-3 in the final to register an outstanding 11th ATP clay court title, one of the highest numbers among active players.
Ruud has resisted the temptation to rest for Roland Garros and will defend his title. He undoubtedly hopes to receive the ideal preparation for competing in Paris this year, having been the runner-up in 2022 and 2023.
The three-time Grand Slam champion will need to negotiate a tough entry list to retain his title. One of the most notable names on it is the world No. 4 and last year's US Open champion,
Taylor Fritz.
The American No. 1 struggled on clay throughout much of his career, but made significant improvements in 2024, reaching the final of the Munich Open and the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time.
Fritz, like many Americans over the years, initially found it challenging to translate his powerful game to clay. He deserves considerable credit for working hard and not relying on good hard-court and grass results to be successful.
A matchup between Ruud and Fritz in Geneva could be an intriguing spectacle. They met at last year's French Open, with the two-time runner-up at Roland Garros ending his opponent's career-best run at the venue.
Grigor Dimitrov is another high-profile name on the entry list. He created headlines for the wrong reasons at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters by suffering a shocking 0-6, 0-6 defeat in the quarterfinal to Alex de Minaur.
That overshadowed what had been a positive tournament for
the 2025 Miami Open semifinalist before the loss. Although clay is not Dimitrov's best surface, he was the runner-up at the 2023 Geneva Open to Nicolas Jarry.
Like Fritz, Dimitrov also had a career-best performance at Roland Garros, getting to the quarterfinals. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner proved too good for him at that stage, winning their match in straight sets.
2024 runner-up Machac is set to return to the tournament scheduled from May 19th to 24th. The Czech managed a stunning semifinal victory against Novak Djokovic, who was playing to gain confidence before the French Open, during that run.
Hubert Hurkacz is on the entry list for the Geneva Open. Hopefully,
he will be fit and ready, as he has missed a run of tournaments since losing to Alex de Minaur at the 2025 Indian Wells Open. The Pole plans to return at the Madrid Open.
Karen Khachanov,
Denis Shapovalov,
Tallon Griekspoor, Alex Michelsen, and
Jordan Thompson are some of the other players on the Geneva Open entry list. It promises to be a great tournament.
