Tomas Machac was born on October 13, 2000, in Prague, Czech Republic, to Tomas and Daniela Machac. He began playing tennis at the age of 5 by hitting a ball against a wall while his older sister played. Machac was invited to train at TK Sparta Praha in Prague and has practiced there ever since.
After winning a maiden ATP Challenger Tour title in Koblenz in February 2020, Machac qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at the 2020 French Open. He did this by coming through qualifying without dropping a set. The Czech then lost a thrilling battle with Taylor Fritz in five sets.
Machac claimed a first Grand Slam main draw victory at the 2021 Australian Open by overcoming Mario Vilella Martinez, before falling to Matteo Berrettini in four sets. He also obtained another ATP Challenger Tour title that year in March in Kazakhstan.
2022 was the first year that Machac ended a season inside the Top 100. He achieved this due to a variety of solid results. The first was another second-round showing at the Australian Open, beating Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the first round. He then won his first match at ATP Masters 1000 level in Indian Wells against Alexei Popyrin.
Machac’s results on the Challenger Tour also led to him breaking the Top 100. He earned two Challenger titles in the same season for the first time in 2022, courtesy of runs in Traralgon, Australia, and Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland.
After struggling for most of the 2023 season, Machac ended the year very strongly. He did this by winning two Challenger titles in the same month in October. These were both in France, in Orleans, and in Mouilleron-le-Captif.
Machac built on that momentum to have an outstanding start to 2024. He reached a first Grand Slam third-round at the Australian Open, beating the 17th seed Frances Tiafoe. Machac also pushed Karen Khachanov very hard in the third round before eventually losing 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
That was followed by a maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the Miami Open. Machac recorded impressive triumphs against Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray to reach that stage. He then lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the quarter-final.
