The 2025
Geneva Open does not offer the same rewards as the 2025 Hamburg Open, which is also played next week, but the entry list for the Swiss tournament is arguably better.
Tournament organizers in Hamburg were undoubtedly feeling good about their work after Jannik Sinner signed up to play, assuming he would be rusty at the 2025 Italian Open and need more matches afterward.
Instead, Sinner reached the Italian Open final and
withdrew from the tournament in Hamburg. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti, and Jakub Mensik also pulled out of the
ATP 500 event.
By contrast, the Geneva Open benefited from
Novak Djokovic accepting a wild card. The tennis legend also entered the tournament last year, and wants to use it as an opportunity to gain match sharpness before Roland Garros.
Taylor Fritz is also on the entry list. The most significant blow for the organizers in Geneva was the decision of defending champion and three-time winner Casper Ruud to withdraw from the event.
The Geneva Open not being able to give
the same prize money or ranking points as the Hamburg Open does not mean the rewards are bad. There are still ample incentives for the players to fight for the largest share of the prize pot.
This year's Geneva Open champion will earn €90,675 and 250 ranking points. Ruud won the title in 2021, 2022, and 2024. Nicolas Jarry's triumph in 2023 was the only break in the Norwegian's dominance of the event.
Despite his poor recent form, Djokovic undoubtedly has a great chance of winning a 100th ATP title in Geneva. Only Roger Federer has secured more titles since 1990. The Swiss maestro claimed 103 crowns during his legendary career.
Machac finished as the runner-up to Ruud last year after beating Djokovic in the semifinal. The Czech is on the entry list for 2025 and might back himself more for the title after the news of Ruud's withdrawal.
The 2025 Geneva runner-up will receive 52,890 and 165 ranking points. Those points could help some players climb the rankings, although Djokovic probably does not care about that at this stage of his career.
Whichever men lose in the semifinals are also guaranteed to get a decent reward. 31,090 and 100 points are on offer for that achievement. Flavio Cobolli was the other 2024 semifinalist in Geneva.
Tallon Griekspoor, Alex Michelsen, Alexander Shevchenko, and Sebastian Baez were the losing 2024 quarterfinalists. €18,015 and 50 ranking points will be awarded to the four players who fall at that stage this year.
The Top four seeds in Geneva are given a bye to the round of 16. Unless there are further withdrawals, those players will be Fritz, Djokovic, Machac, and Karen Khachanov. Therefore, they are guaranteed to at least take home the rewards for reaching the round of 16.
€10,460 and 25 points are on offer for those in the round of 16 at the Geneva Open. No ranking points are given to players who lose in the opening round of ATP 250 tournaments, but they will still collect €6,390.
