Jannik Sinner managed a superb comeback in the semifinal of the 2025
Italian Open, but he did it without his mother's support.
After the world No. 1's stunning performance in
his 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal, the fans on Centre Court were stunned when
Tommy Paul raced into a 6-1 lead due to several unforced errors from the home favorite.
Thankfully for the Italian fans, Sinner responded emphatically to win the final two sets 6-0, 6-3. Reaching the final in his first tournament back after being suspended for three months is a superb achievement.
Siglinde Sinner, mother of the three-time Grand Slam champion, watched her son's uncharacteristically poor performance in the opening set before leaving Centre Court during the break before the second set.
Some fans noticed that Siglinde did not return afterward. Sinner relied on his coaching team and father for motivation, but this year's Australian Open winner turned the match around without needing much active guidance.
Gazzetta caught up with Siglinde just a few minutes after she left the court. Sinner's parent explained how rare it is for her to watch all of the 23-year-old's matches, and admitted that his father finds it easier to handle.
"I left at the end of the first set. I'll take a walk around here and wait for the match to end. I never follow Jannik's entire matches live, it rarely happens. I prefer to stay in front of the TV. Only in Turin did I manage to see the final and a bit of the previous rounds. My husband stayed, he never has any problems."
During her explanation for not returning to the match with Paul, Siglinde revealed Sinner's motto, which helps him cope with challenging losses at any tournament worldwide.
"No, I'm not even thinking about it. I'll wait for it to finish, and I'll continue walking. And anyway, as my son says, if things go badly, 'It's just a game.'"
Sinner's victory against Paul set up a blockbuster meeting with Carlos Alcaraz in the final. They last met on the
ATP Tour seven months ago in an extraordinary 2024 China Open final, which the Spaniard won in a deciding set tiebreak.
Incredibly, Sinner has not lost a professional match since then. Being banned for three months this year does not alter how impressive that streak is. The Italian went undefeated at the Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals, Davis Cup, Australian Open, and so far at the Italian Open.
One concern was Sinner appearing
to be in discomfort during the match with Paul, but he does not seem too concerned about it. The world No. 1 has a blister on his foot, which he expects to be able to manage.
Although Sinner's level has been phenomenal in Rome, overcoming Alcaraz will undoubtedly be his most difficult challenge. The two have played some of the best matches this decade, and their rivalry could be one of the greatest in tennis history.
They last played on clay in the 2024 French Open semifinal. Sinner pushed Alcaraz to five sets but began to struggle physically in the final set.
