The 2025 Strasbourg Open is the last tournament before the start of the clay-court Grand Slam at Roland Garros, and the draw for this WTA 500 event has been revealed.
Organizing a tennis tournament one week before a Grand Slam is always tricky. The Hamburg Open organizers could talk about that for hours, as they saw the likes of Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, and Tommy Paul withdraw from the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg.
That's because most of these players had sufficient preparation for the French Open at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, which is why they didn't see it as necessary to play again.
The exact opposite scenario played out at the WTA 500 tournament in Strasbourg, which runs from May 18th to 24th. Many top players wanted to play a few more matches before moving to Paris, accepting wild cards to play at the Strasbourg Open. The top seed, Jessica Pegula, is one of those who accepted a wild card.
Like all top four seeded players, the American has a first-round bye. In the second round, Pegula will take on Anna Kalinskaya or a qualifier. But it's the quarter-final match that could be even more brutal for Pegula.
Danielle Collins and Sofia Kenin will meet in an all-American first-round blockbuster, the winner of that match will play against the winner of another first-round blockbuster between Emma Raducanu and the sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina. The best from this part of the draw could play against Pegula in the quarter-finals.
On the opposite side of the draw is another American player, Emma Navarro. The second seed will start against either Beatriz Haddad Maia or Magdalena Frech, who will meet in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament.
Elena Rybakina is one of the top names in the draw. The Kazakhstani player is the fourth seed, and her tournament will start against one of the qualifiers or Xinyu Wang. That's a relatively favorable draw for the former Wimbledon champion, who has struggled recently.
Paula Badosa will want to find her top form as well. The Spaniard is the third seed, and she hasn't played a lot recently. Badosa last played at the Miami Open, where she was forced to withdraw.
Now, it seems that she's ready to compete again, and luckily for her, she will have a first-round bye. Badosa will then play against a qualifier or Alize Cornet, who received a wild card as a home player.
