The 2026
Montpellier Open will be the first
ATP 250 tournament held after the Australian Open, and the
entry list for this event has been released.
The first week after the Australian Open is occupied by the first round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers, but players who didn't make their teams, didn't have a tie, or chose not to compete, now also have an
ATP 250 tournament, in which they can play.
That event is the
Montpellier Open, previously also known as the Open Sud de France, but now officially called the Open Occitanie. It will run from February 2nd to 8th, and it will be the 39th edition of the tournament. Even though it initially seemed that the tournament would be held without its defending champion, that has changed.
Felix Auger-Aliassime, who won the title at the Sud de France Arena in 2025, will return to Montpellier to defend his trophy. The Canadian player enjoys indoor conditions, and he will try to prove his dominance in such conditions once again in front of the fans in France.
Fans will likely enjoy Auger-Aliassime's game with bright smiles on their faces, but there might be a teary eye or two when a different man steps onto the court.
Stan Wawrinka will retire from professional tennis this year, which means it will be his last time competing at the
Montpellier Open. The Swiss player also received a wild card to compete in this
ATP 250 event.
The list of former
Montpellier Open champions includes names like Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, but Auger-Aliassime will be the only former winner who will compete in 2026.
However, the list of players who will want to challenge him for the title is quite long. Flavio Cobolli will be one of the players, who will believe they are capable of dethroning
Auger-Aliassime in the indoor conditions in Montpellier.
Tallon Griekspoor is a player who should benefit from the indoor conditions, and he, too, will want to have a deep run. Another player who will be among the favorites to win is
Tomas Machac. The Czech player had an outstanding start to the 2026 season, winning the title in Adelaide and beating Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open. He will want to prove that it was not a fluke and follow up on his great form.
Fans in Montpellier will, of course, look forward to seeing their own players. Ugo Humbert, Arthur Fils, Valentin Royer, Arthur Cazaux, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Adrian Mannarino, and Quentin Halys are all Frenchmen who appear on the main draw
entry list, but many more compatriots could join them through the qualifying.
