Tennis will return to Romania with the
Transylvania Open in Cluj, and with it, also some of the best players in the world.
This year, the
Transylvania Open will be held for the sixth time. The tournament was first held in 2021, and since then, there have been five different champions and five different finalists. Three home players made it to the final, but there has never been a Romanian champion, as Simona Halep, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, and Ana Bogdan all lost in the final.
The former
Transylvania Open champions are Anett Kontaveit, Anna Blinkova, Tamara Korpatsch, Karolina Pliskova, and
Anastasia Potapova. Only one of them will come back in 2026, and it will be the most recent champion, as Potapova will return to defend her trophy, this time,
representing Austria.
One of the players who never misses a chance to play in Romania is
Emma Raducanu. The British No. 1 has Romanian roots, which is why she always enjoys coming back to the country. She made the
Transylvania Open quarter-finals when the event debuted in 2021, and this year, she will want to go even further.
Unlike the Ostrava Open, which is held in the same week, the
Transylvania Open in Cluj will welcome many home players. Fans in Cluj will be happy to see multiple Romanian players compete at the
WTA 250 event from February 1st to 7th.
Jaqueline Cristian, Sorana Cirstea, and Elena-Gabriela Ruse are the three players who entered the main draw directly, and they will hope to be joined by more Romanian players who can enter the main draw as wild cards or qualifiers.
As at every
WTA 250 tournament, many players will believe they have a shot at winning the title. Olga Danilovic,
Donna Vekic, and Antonia Ruzic will all hope that they will be one of the players having a deep run in Cluj.
The
entry list also includes players such as Xinyu Wang, Anna Bondar, Camila Osorio, and Oleksandra Oliynykova, who went viral at the Australian Open, also for
her comments about Aryna Sabalenka, among other things.
Fans at the
Transylvania Open will also have a chance to see Simona Halep, even though not on the tennis court. The legendary Romanian player retired from the sport in Cluj last year, and she will return this year as an ambassador for the event.
The former
WTA world No. 1 will present the trophy to the champion at the event, which means a lot to her, as it was the place where she last stood on the court as a professional.
"Transylvania Open is, for me, more than a tournament. It is the place where I felt the support of Romanian fans at the highest level and where I experienced moments that will always remain close to my heart. I’m happy to return and contribute with a different kind of energy – the one that supports and encourages future generations."
