The Ostrava Open returns to the WTA calendar, and the entry list for the comeback event has been released.
There have been three editions of this WTA 250 event held in Ostrava. Previously, between 1994 and 1998, Ostrava hosted an ATP event, with the list of champions including names such as Andre Agassi and Wayne Ferreira.
Then, for more than two decades, there was no Tour-level event held in Ostrava, but that changed in 2020 when the Ostrava Open appeared in the WTA calendar. The event was held for three seasons, with Aryna Sabalenka, Anett Kontaveit, and Barbora Krejcikova winning the three titles.
At the time, it was a WTA 500 tournament, but this year, when the tournament returns after four years, it is "only" a WTA 250 event. That will also be reflected on the field, which will compete at the Ostravar Arena from February 1st to 7th.
Understandably, none of the former champions or former finalists (Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sakkari, and Iga Swiatek) will compete at the Ostrava Open this year. In fact, no player ranked inside the Top 40 in the WTA Rankings will play in Ostrava.
The highest-ranked player who entered the Ostrava Open entry list is Tatjana Maria. Surprisingly, there are no Czech players on the Ostrava Open entry list, so unless some receive a late wild-card or enter through the qualifying, the tournament will be, quite bizarrely, held without any home players on its return to the calendar. That certainly won't help the chances of keeping the tournament running.
Although there will be no Czech players who entered the Ostrava Open main draw directly, there will still be plenty of exciting players who will try to attract fans into the Ostravar Arena. Probably one of the most exciting players on the entry list is Alycia Parks.
The American player loves indoor conditions, and she will try to prove that against a field of players, which allows anyone to have a miracle run to the trophy in Ostrava.
Another player who will be incredibly exciting to watch is Katie Boulter. The 29-year-old British player used to be the highest-ranked player from her country, once ranked 23rd in the world, but she has since slipped out of the Top 100.
The three-time WTA titlist will want to remember her peak days from 2024 and restart her career with another victorious run. But the field will be incredibly competitive, with the likes of Emiliana Arango, Anna Blikova, Francesca Jones, and Rebecca Sramkova all likely thinking about the Ostrava Open trophy.
