The 2026
Transylvania Open promises to be a terrific event, and the players involved will fight for the highest share of the
prize money and ranking points.
Emma Raducanu is among the most high-profile names on the entry list for the
Transylvania Open. Although she has not reached a final since the 2021 US Open, her status as a former Grand Slam champion helps an event's prestige.
The Briton's progress in Transylvania should be particularly fascinating because it will be her first tournament since
splitting from coach Francisco Roig, who joined the lengthy list of coaches she has parted ways with.
Last year's edition of the tournament in Romania was memorable for Simona Halep suddenly announcing the end of her career after a 1-6, 1-6 thumping by Lucia Bronzetti. The former world No. 1 realized she would never return to her former level.
Although Halep, Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Ana Bogdan are among the former runner-ups, no Romanians have won the
WTA 250 tournament since it debuted in 2021. The home fans will hope that that changes this year.
Raucanu, Donna Vekic, Olga Danilovic, and the other players on the entry list have one of their best opportunities to win a title this year, and to accumulate some decent
prize money and ranking points at the same time.
The 2026
Transylvania Open champion will be rewarded with $37,390 and 250 points. Anastasia Potapova, known by some tennis fans for her divorce from Alexander Shevchenko, is the defending champion. She recovered from losing the first set against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the final.
Karolina Pliskova, Tamara Korpatsch, Anna Blinkova, and Anett Kontaveit are the former winners of the event. Pliskova, a former world No. 1, secured the title unexpectedly after a challenging previous few years.
This year's defeated finalist at the
Transylvania Open will earn 163 points and $22,125. Those 163 points can act as a turning point for several players, such as Vekic, who has struggled since
winning an Olympic silver medal 18 months ago.
Katerina Siniakova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich were knocked out in the 2025 semifinals. Unfortunately for Siniakova, she had to retire four games into her match against Bronzetti because of an injury.
Hopefully, none of this year's semifinalists suffer that fate. Players who get that far but no further will have $12,331 added to their bank accounts and 98 points added to their
WTA rankings totals.
The
prize money drops to four figures from the quarterfinals and earlier. Defeated quarterfinalists will receive $7,025 and 54 points for that achievement and for winning two matches in Romania.
Just one victory to progress to the round of 16 will earn players 30 points and $4,285, while those who fall at the first hurdle will collect one ranking point and $3,065. The difference in financial rewards between the two rounds is relatively small.
Raducanu would undoubtedly be disappointed with only winning one match. Despite not having a permanent coach, the
Transylvania Open is a great opportunity for her to win multiple matches.
