The 2026
Ostrava Open will be one of three tournaments played on the
WTA Tour next week, and the
prize money for it has become public.
Many
WTA events have been the same for years and show few signs of changing. However, the
Ostrava Open, which has not been held since 2022, stands out as a new part of this year's calendar.
The tournament had one year in Prostejov in 1999 before being inactive for 21 years. When the
WTA was struggling to fill the calendar in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Czech event returned in Ostrava.
After two more editions in 2021 and 2022, it seemed like the
Ostrava Open might disappear from the calendar again when a space could not be found for it from 2023 until 2025. Thankfully for the local fans, it will return next week.
Katie Boulter, who is engaged to fellow player Alex de Minaur, and
Alycia Parks are among those set to play at the
WTA 250 tournament. Their powerful games can be challenging to stop when they are playing well.
Being a
WTA 250-level event rather than a WTA 500, as the
Ostrava Open was from 2020 to 2022, comes with the caveat that lower
prize money is available. Nonetheless, the players on the entry list will try to claim the highest percentage of the rewards available.
The 2025
Ostrava Open champion will earn $37,390 and 250 points. Aryna Sabalenka, who was
controversially called for a hindrance at the 2026 Australian Open, Barbora Krejcikova, and Anett Kontaveit are former winners of the tournament.
Krejcikova's 2022 triumph was particularly memorable because she defeated Iga Swiatek in front of her home fans. Maria Sakkari and two-time Australian Open champion Maria Sakkari are the other two former runner-ups.
Finishing as the defeated finalist at the 2026
Ostrava Open will be enough for players to get 163 points and $22,125. There are many possible finalists in what seems an open entry list on paper.
The beaten
Ostrava Open semifinalists will depart the Czech Republic with 98 points and $12,331. Those 98 points would likely be enough for any lower-ranked players who came from qualifying to swiftly climb the rankings.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was among those who fell in the quarterfinals of the 2022 iteration. The four women who suffer that fate next week will receive $7,025 and 54 ranking points.
All players in the draw must win a match to reach the round of 16, as no byes are awarded at
WTA 250s. Those who manage that are guaranteed at least 30 points and $4,285 for their efforts.
Those who do not progress through the opening round will still have $3,065 transferred to their accounts. One ranking point is also given to those who are eliminated at the first hurdle of
WTA 250s.
The 2026 Abu Dhabi Open and the 2026 Transylvania Open, being held during the same week, create stiff competition for Ostrava's organizers. Their tournament can stand out if the committed players produce much excellent tennis.
