The 2025
Japan Open will have a very strong
draw led by the world No. 1 player,
Carlos Alcaraz.
The
ATP 500 event in Tokyo is the first tournament of such a category after the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. It's held in the same week as the China Open in Beijing, which starts one day later. The Japan Open begins on September 24th.
Carlos Alcaraz competed in Beijing last year, and he even won the trophy in the Chinese capital. He beat Jannik Sinner in a memorable final, but while the Italian player will play in Beijing again, Alcaraz chose to travel to Tokyo instead.
Alcaraz will play at the event for the first time, and he will be the top seed. There are no first-round byes in Tokyo, which means the Spaniard will start with a match against Sebastian Baez, who is a dangerous player, but that applies mostly to the clay courts. The event in Tokyo is played on hard courts.
The world No. 1 player travelled to Tokyo from San Francisco, where he competed at the Laver Cup. He wasn't the only player who made that journey, as
Taylor Fritz,
Tomas Machac,
Holger Rune, Alex Michelsen, Jenson Brooksby, and
Casper Ruud were all part of teams Europe and World at the 2025 Laver Cup.
Fritz is the second seed in Tokyo, and apart from Alcaraz, he will probably be the most-watched player. Not only because he is an exciting player, but because he beat the Spaniard at the Laver Cup, and the two can meet in the final at the Japan Open as the top two seeds.
To get there, Fritz (and Alcaraz) will first have to win four matches. The American player will face a difficult first-round challenge, as he will take on Gabriel Diallo, who is a dangerous opponent thanks to his big serve.
Holger Rune is the third seed in Tokyo. He will play against an incredibly challenging opponent as well. The Danish youngster will start his journey in Japan against Hamad Medjedovic, who can beat some of the best players in the world on his good day.
Casper Ruud, on the other hand, will have to face not only his opponent but also the Japanese crowd in his first-round match. The fourth-seeded Norwegian will open against Shintaro Mochizuki, who is a home player who received a wild card.
Frances Tiafoe will compete at the event as well. He is the eighth seed and drew a qualifier in the first round. That might look like a lucky draw, but Tiafoe's potential quarter-final opponent is Alcaraz, which certainly wipes the smile away from the American's face, even though he is a player who likes big matches.
Tomas Machac, too, will start against one of the qualifiers. The fifth-seeded Czech is in Fritz's quarter, which means the two could meet in the quarter-finals.
