The
ATP Tour's oldest tournament returns at the 2025
Japan Open, scheduled from September 24th to 30th, and the
prize money and ranking points on offer have been unveiled.
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Pete Sampras, and Jim Courier are all former winners of the ATP 500 tournament. It debuted in 1972 and remains a critical event on the calendar.
Despite the Japan Open's rich history, this year's iteration could be one of the best ever because of
Carlos Alcaraz's involvement. The five-time Grand Slam champion is
the most notable name on the entry list.
Alcaraz won the 2024 China Open,
defeating Jannik Sinner in a memorable three-hour final. The 2025 edition of the Beijing tournament runs simultaneously with the Japan Open again, and most would have expected the Spaniard to play there.
As usual,
the China Open's prize money is higher than in Tokyo, which made Alcaraz's decision even more surprising. The Japanese organizers might have used a significant amount of their budget to give him a very high appearance fee.
Ben Shelton, Jack Draper, Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, and Taylor Fritz are among those on the Japan Open entry list. They and the other men will fight for the highest share of the $2,226,470 prize money pot.
This year's Japan Open champion will earn $416,365 and 500 ranking points. Arthur Fils won the 2024 edition with an epic final victory against his compatriot, Ugo Humbert, after a lengthy battle.
The $416,365 is a significant improvement on the $340,010 awarded to Fils last year. Last year's prize money pot was $1,818,380, showing how much effort the organizers have made to attract top players.
The Japan Open runner-up will receive $224,035 and 330 points. Although losing the 2024 final was disappointing, Humbert's ranking improved because of his impressive run to that point in the Japanese capital.
Holger Rune and Tomas Machac were 2024's beaten semifinalists. Rune fell in two very close tiebreaks against Fils. The players who get that far in a few weeks will collect $119,395 and 200 points.
Fils's deciding set tiebreak quarterfinal win against Shelton, the 2023 champion in Tokyo, was the best match of last year's tournament. The four defeated quarterfinalists are guaranteed to receive $61,000 and 100 ranking points.
At ATP 250 tournaments, the Top four seeds get a bye into the round of 16, but that is not the case for 500-level events. The WTA uses the opposite system: it awards byes to the Top four seeds at WTA 500 level but not 250.
That means Alcaraz will need to overcome an opponent in the round of 32 to reach the round of 16. That would ensure the two-time Wimbledon winner walks away from Tokyo with at least $32,560 and 50 ranking points.
No points are given to players who lose in the opening round of ATP 500 tournaments like the Japan Open or the China Open. However, the 16 players who fall at the first hurdle will still have $17,365 added to their bank accounts.
