The penultimate
WTA 1000 tournament of the season will be held in Beijing, and the
draw for the 2025
China Open has been unveiled.
The last WTA 1000 event before the one in Beijing was more than a month ago in Cincinnati. If some of the fans forgot how incredibly stacked the field can be for such a tournament, the 2025 China Open is a great reminder.
It will be held without the world No. 1 player,
Aryna Sabalenka, who withdrew from the event. However, even without Sabalenka in the draw, it is incredibly stacked with many great potential matchups.
Iga Swiatek is the top seed in Sabalenka's absence. Like all seeded players, she won't have to play a first-round match thanks to a bye. Swiatek will start in the second round against a home wild card, Yue Yuan, or Yulia Putintseva.
The amount of high-quality quarter-final opponents she could face is ridiculous. Swiatek could play against four-time Grand Slam champion
Naomi Osaka, former US Open winner
Emma Raducanu, or the fifth-seeded
Jessica Pegula.
Raducanu is the 30th seed and will start against
Donna Vekic or a qualifier. Osaka is the 12th seed, and she will begin against one of the qualifiers. Pegula, on the other hand, will play against the winner of the match between Ajla Tomljanovic and Yuliia Starodubtseva.
The opposite side of the draw is quite challenging as well.
Coco Gauff is the defending champion in Beijing, and she is also the second seed. The young American will play against Lucia Bronzetti or Kamilla Rakhimova in her first match.
After that, she can meet the 25th-seeded Leylah Fernandez or Maria Sakkari, who is not even among the seeded players. Gauff's potential quarter-final opponent could be
Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina is the eighth seed, and she will start against the winner of the match between Laura Siegemund and Caty McNally. She might then play against teenage sensation Iva Jovic, who is the 32nd seed, thanks to Sabalenka's withdrawal.
