The women's singles at the 2025 China Open, scheduled from September 24th to October 5th, contains some of the most significant financial incentives on this year's WTA Tour.
Coco Gauff won last year's iteration. The American secured her second WTA 1000 title with an emphatic final victory against Karolina Muchova, halting a bad run of form during the previous few months.
Gauff enters the 2025 edition in a similar position after a disappointing US Open. She also parted from her coach, Matt Daly, before the season's final Grand Slam, with whom she won the 2024 China Open in their first tournament together.
Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek start as the event's favorites. World No. 1 Sabalenka claimed back-to-back US Opens a couple of weeks ago, and Swiatek has enjoyed a resurgence since the grass-court swing, winning Wimbledon and moving back to No. 2 in the rankings.
Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu, Mirra Andreeva, and Elena Rybakina are among the others hoping to make a mark in Beijing, and the financial rewards for going far at the tournament should give everyone ample incentive.
A massive $8,963,700 prize money pot is being committed by the tournament organizers. Those in the main draw will try to attain the highest percentage possible of that considerable amount.
The 2025 China Open women's singles champion will receive $1,124,380 and 1,000 ranking points. Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Gauff hope to claim those ranking points in their quest to finish as the year-end No. 1.
Gauff's chances are slimmest because she will defend the points she won from winning last year's WTA Finals and the China Open. Swiatek, who missed the 2024 Asian swing while provisionally suspended, has a better opportunity of catching Sabalenka.
The runner-up in Beijing will collect $597,890 and 650 points for their achievement. Muchova's defeat in the 2024 final means she has lost both of her 1000 final appearances to Gauff. The other occasion was the 2023 Cincinnati Open final.
Home hero Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa were last year's defeated semifinalists. The women who get that far at this year's tournament without going further will receive $332,160 and 390 points.
Sabalenka was defeated in the 2024 quarterfinals by a superb performance by Muchova. Mirra Andreeva, Shuai Zhang, and Yulia Starodubtseva were the others beaten at that stage. $189,075 and 215 points are the guaranteed rewards for this year's quarterfinalists.
For the round of 16, 120 points and $103,225 will be handed to the players. Those who fall in the round of 32 are set to earn 65 points and $60,440 for getting through the opening two rounds. The top 32 seeds get byes in the opening round.
$35,260 and 35 points will be handed to players who are eliminated in the second round, and it will be $23,760 and 10 points for the first round, guaranteeing players some financial benefit even if they fail to win a main draw match.
Last year's China Open was one of the season's best tournaments. Hopefully, the 2025 iteration can produce similar entertainment and drama for fans to enjoy.
