The next WTA 1000 tournament will occur at the 2025
China Open from September 24th to October 5th. Fans can expect to see quality tennis from the best women's players in the world.
Aside from the event not being played from 2020 until 2022 because of strict lockdown restrictions in China during the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament in Beijing has been a crucial 1000-level(previously known as a Premier Mandatory event) since 2004.
Coco Gauff entered last year's China Open in poor form. She split from her coach, Brad Gilbert, after losing to Emma Navarro at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and the US Open, visibly lacking confidence in that period.
Hiring Matt Daly proved an inspired choice. The American won the 2024 China Open, their first tournament together, defeating Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 in the final with one of her best-ever performances.
Despite also securing the 2024 WTA Finals and 2025 French Open titles with Daly in her corner,
Gauff chose to part with him before the 2025 US Open and hired Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics specialist coach, to help with her troublesome serve.
The two-time Grand Slam champion struggled for lengthy periods in the opening two rounds at Flushing Meadows against Ajla Tomljanovic and Donna Vekic, but found a way through both matches.
Gauff is the best on the WTA Tour at digging in when not at her best. Nonetheless, the 21-year-old will not win the US Open or the China Open if she does not improve her level
since winning the French Open.
Aryna Sabalenka lost in last year's quarterfinal to Muchova. That was a rare hard-court blemish in 2024 for the world No. 1, after triumphing at the 2024 Australian Open and US Open. She has reached every hard court Grand Slam final since the start of 2023.
Sabalenka's mood in Beijing could significantly depend on the US Open. If she fails to defend her title, it would guarantee she ends this season without any Grand Slam crowns despite coming so close in finals at the Australian Open and French Open.
A few months ago, 2023 China Open champion
Iga Swiatek would not have been among the title favorites. She went 12 months without reaching a final before dramatically improving her fortunes since this year's grass court swing.
The six-time major champion claimed maiden titles at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open. Despite winning only one hard-court Grand Slam at the 2022 US Open, her form is so good that many rated her as the pre-tournament women's favorite in New York.
Mirra Andreeva hopes to add a third WTA 1000 title this season at the China Open. The teenager reigned supreme at the Dubai Championships and Indian Wells Open, delivering iconic speeches thanking herself at both.
Elena Rybakina,
Jessica Pegula,
Emma Raducanu,
Naomi Osaka, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, and
Paula Badosa, who withdrew from the US Open
because of an injury issue, are some of the other names on the
entry list. Fans will undoubtedly be treated to much superb tennis.
