Since stepping away from professional tennis, Serena Williams has kept herself busy, including efforts to stay fit and healthy. The WTA legend spoke about losing a huge amount of weight in a recent interview.
Williams's remarkable career ended over three years ago at the 2022 US Open. She won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and dominated women's tennis with a powerful game unlike any other.
Though rumors about her returning, especially since Serena's sister and fellow legend Venus Williams remains active at 45, have persisted, there have been no indications of the 43-year-old making a comeback.
Since retiring, Williams has remained active as a business owner, and she and Venus also launched their own podcast a few days ago. Two of tennis's most important figures discussing their shared lives as sisters and rivals on the court is a fascinating development for tennis fans.
Being healthy is another of Serena's passions. In an interview with People Magazine, the seven-time Wimbledon singles winner revealed how challenging it was to lose weight after becoming a mother in 2017 and 2023.
"I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained. It was crazy because I'd never been in a place like that in my life where I worked so hard, ate so healthy and could never get down to where I needed to be at."
"I had never taken shortcuts in my career and always worked really hard. I know what it takes to be the best. So it was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked."
After multiple attempts at shedding weight, Serena began using a GLP-1 treatment, a receptor agonist that works in the brain to impact satiety. It proved to be a game-changer for the American.
"I did a lot of research on it. I was like, 'is this a shortcut? What are the benefits? What are not the benefits?' I really wanted to dive into it before I just did it. GLP-1 helped me enhance everything that I was already doing — eating healthy and working out, whether it was as a professional athlete at the top level of tennis or just going to the gym every day."
"I just can do more. I'm more active. My joints don't hurt as much. I just feel like something as simple as just getting down is a lot easier for me. And I do it a lot faster. I feel like I have a lot of energy and it's great. I just feel pretty good about it."
Despite being happy with her 31-pound weight loss, Serena thinks no one should be self-conscious about their body image and says there is nothing wrong with being a different size.
"Weight loss should never really change your self-image. Women often experience judgment about their bodies at any size, and I'm no stranger to that. So I feel like you should love yourself at any size and any look."
"But the size I was before, there was nothing wrong with it. It's just not what I wanted to have. I just knew that I wanted to be where I personally felt comfortable."
