Venus Williams' journey at the 2025
US Open is not over, as she also appeared in the doubles draw.
Williams returned to the tennis courts earlier this year in Washington. She then also played in Cincinnati, and probably the most impressive match of her comeback happened at the US Open.
The 45-year-old legend took on the current
WTA World No. 13 player, Karolina Muchova, under the night lights of the Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was an epic match, with Venus playing at a level unheard of for a 45-year-old.
The American's tennis was incredibly impressive, as she took a set from one of the best players of the current generation. There aren't enough superlatives to describe Williams' performance, and luckily for the fans in New York, it wasn't the last time they got a chance to see her on the courts this year.
Before the singles main draws started, Williams played in the mixed doubles competition with Reilly Opelka but lost to Muchova and Andrey Rublev in the first round of the tournament. Now, she signed up also for the women's doubles event.
In 2023,
Williams said she wouldn't play doubles anymore after her sister retired, but she has already appeared on the doubles court with Hailey Baptiste in Washington and now also with Opelka in New York.
Another player will have a chance to join the legend on the court, and it will be
Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian is a former singles finalist at the US Open and a former World No. 17 player in the doubles rankings.
The two formed a team, surprisingly appearing in the draw after receiving one of the wild cards. But their draw is anything but easy. The American-Canadian duo will start against the sixth-seeded team of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez. Kichenok is actually the defending champion after winning the tournament last year with Jelena Ostapenko.
Should Williams and Fernandez succeed, their draw might become a bit more playable, but if they had a dream run, their quarter-final opponents could be the first-seeded Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.
What's next for Venus Williams?
At the moment, it's tough to predict where Venus Williams' career will head next. She has shown multiple times that despite being 45, she still has the level to compete with the best players in the world.
On top of that, every tournament director in the world would probably give her a wild card, as the legend attracts huge crowds, regardless of where she plays.
The location of her matches, however, can be a problem. After losing to Muchova in New York, Venus admitted that she doesn't feel like travelling outside of the United States because of tennis. That means it's unlikely fans will see her on the courts again this year.
