Alexander Zverev lost his first match at the 2025 Laver Cup, and he revealed some struggles with an injury after the loss.
Zverev is one of the recorders at the Laver Cup. He has the most appearances, wins, and wins in singles matches, and also holds the record for the most singles points. The German player also holds the record for the most total points won.
This year in San Francisco, however, he didn't manage to improve his statistics, apart from increasing the total number of his participations. In his first match, he played against Alex de Minaur, and it wouldn't be too far from the truth to say that the Australian schooled Zverev.
De Minaur was better throughout the match, beating Zverev 6-1, 6-4 in just 90 minutes of play. For the ATP world No. 3 player, it wasn't a good match, especially the first half an hour. He fell behind 0-5 and was two points away from losing the opening set 0-6.
Eventually, Zverev was able to fight for two points for Team Europe, but he just didn't have enough to trouble De Minaur more than he did. After the match, he spoke about his performance, which he knew was not good enough.
"I think today was more about more, to be very honest. I just started off extremely bad. I was 4-0 down within a couple of minutes, so the first set was gone very, very quickly. Then the second set I was fighting, but I was just not playing well, just not playing well enough, just not doing enough to win this match."
"I think he played very solid. I think he returned well. I mean, I didn't hit many aces, but I still had a very high first-serve percentage. I just didn't play well enough from the baseline, I feel like."
Speaking after his loss to De Minaur, Zverev mentioned that he hasn't practiced a lot in recent weeks, which is something he has struggled with already during the North American swing.
"I didn't practice much the last few weeks. It's something I'm working on. I feel like in the U.S. swing it was something that was working well for me in Toronto and Cincinnati. Not so well in New York. You know, it's a process, and it's a process with people that I have behind me as well."
Zverev was then asked further about his issues and condition during the match against De Minaur. The German player stated that he has struggled with his back, but that he felt well against De Minaur after receiving injections.
"I had some back issues, but nothing major. I felt fine out there. I had two injections, so I just needed time off. I feel fine. I feel fine on the court. I feel fine in life. I feel much better than after Wimbledon. Even though I lost today, I'm okay."
