Carlos Alcaraz shockingly lost in his first singles match at the 2025
Laver Cup, and he shared his side of the story after the loss.
Alcaraz first stood on the court in San Francisco on Friday when he teamed up with Jakub Mensik to beat Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen in a doubles match. On Saturday, he played against one half of that team again, but this time on a singles court.
Alcaraz, like against anyone else, was a huge favorite against Fritz. However, the American player played one of the best matches of his tennis career to absolutely dismantle the
ATP world No. 1, 6-3, 6-2.
It was a shocking loss for Alcaraz and the whole Team Europe, and naturally, the 22-year-old faced plenty of questions about his loss after the match. He explained that his opponent used the unique conditions in San Francisco to his advantage.
"It wasn't the match that I was expecting, but you know, I think I have to look a little bit to him that I think he played great tennis. I just wasn't as solid as I wanted in the match, and I think these conditions, it's pretty slow. The balls are really big, so I had to be patient, I had to be solid. I didn't play that match today."
"So respect to Taylor, who played a great match, really solid, playing aggressive when he could. I think everything went to his side, so I had to congratulate him and that play much better game than I did."
Alcaraz gives full credit to Fritz after Laver Cup loss
When Alcaraz loses a match, many often find an answer to the loss in his performance. This time, however, the Spaniard shifted all the focus to his opponent, as Fritz played a fantastic match and deserved all the credit.
"I feel like he was more on the court than me. I think that the first or second shot of the rally was really important, and I think he did it much better than I did. I think that was the key, because as I said, in these conditions, I think the first shots are really important. When you are defending, when you are running on the court, it is really difficult to turn around the situations."
"It is really difficult when you are defending, turning to attack is really difficult because of the balls and the conditions that are really slow. As I said, Taylor was right. He was more aggressive than me. He did much better the first shots than me, and I was running more than him. I think that was the key today."
Alcaraz will still have a chance to make it happen for Team Europe at the 2025 Laver Cup. On Day 3, he will first team up with Casper Ruud in a doubles match against Alex Michelsen and Reilly Opelka, and then, he will play another singles match, this time against Francisco Cerundolo.
