Jannik Sinner may be closing in on a new addition to his team after he was recently pictured with an experienced physiotherapist.
Fitness coaches and physiotherapists hired by
ATP and WTA players usually do not attract much attention. However, Sinner's high-profile and controversial doping story makes him an exception.
The four-time Grand Slam winner tested positive for clostebol at the 2024 US Open after being accidentally contaminated by a massage from his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who had used a spray containing the substance given to him by fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara.
After a lengthy and stressful ordeal, Sinner served a three-month suspension from February until a few days before May's Italian Open. He fired Naldi and Ferrara shortly before the 2024 US Open when the doping story became public.
A few weeks later, Sinner hired Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio as their replacements. Each man enjoyed successful periods with Novak Djokovic, meaning they were viewed as status appointments that sent a signal to other players.
Sinner won a second Australian Open title and had three championship points against Carlos Alcaraz to secure a maiden French Open title. The partnership with Panichi and Badio seemed to be thriving.
That's why Sinner's decision to split with them shortly before the 2025 Wimbledon Championships began caused shock. He was vague about his reasoning at the time and provided few insights into his thought process.
The logic behind his parting from fitness coach Panichi became more apparent when he
astoundingly rehired Ferrara despite his role in Sinner being suspended. That move generated widespread astonishment and some anger among fans.
Although the latest reporting about Sinner's team will not stir as many emotions, it is still an important development. Pictures have circulated on social media of the Italian arriving in Beijing for the 2025
China Open with a new face beside him.
That man was Alejandro Resnicoff. He is a highly experienced physiotherapist who has worked with several figures. Crucially, that includes over 15 years on the ATP Tour, making him a suitable choice for a top player.
Sinner working with Resnicoff, assuming there is no mistake after the Argentine being pictured with him, also makes sense because the former world No. 1 collaborated with him at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
In addition, Resnicoff was present when Sinner launched his own foundation a few months ago. His appearance at such a personal event indicates that he was an important figure in the 24-year-old's life before traveling to Beijing with him.
It is important to note that Sinner's team has not made an official announcement. Although the evidence strongly points to Resnicoff being part of the team, this cannot be guaranteed yet.
Hopefully, Sinner avoids any more controversies in the future. The 2024 US Open champion
did not want to say much about rehiring Ferrara, probably realizing how much blowback there would be from many.
Sinner will try to win a second China Open title when the tournament begins. He triumphed in 2023 before
losing a lengthy and grueling battle against Alcaraz in last year's final.
