The 2025 Hamburg Open, scheduled for May 18th to 24th, will receive much attention due to it being Jannik Sinner's second tournament back after his suspension.
This year's event in Hamburg was moved from its previous position in July, after Wimbledon, to the week before the French Open at Roland Garros, coinciding with the 2025 Geneva Open.
Alexander Zverev was the runner-up to Arthur Fils last year, losing a thrilling and controversial final. The home crowd was left stunned and booed Fils when he hit an underarm serve when down a break point during the deciding set.
Zverev, who was also the 2023 champion in Hamburg, is not on the entry list this year. That is almost certainly due to the French Open occurring the week after, which is one of the German's principal targets for the season.
However, that absence is more than made up for by Sinner being on the entry list. He has been suspended since February 9th after reaching a case settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency in his doping saga.
Sinner's first tournament back will be at the 2025 Italian Open, which ends the day before the Hamburg Open begins. The world No. 1 decided to sign up for the German event, despite it occurring so close to the French Open.
Although Sinner does not usually play in the week before a Grand Slam, the move is not unexpected given the circumstances. He wants to get matches under his belt, as it will have been over three months since the 23-year-old last competed by the time he competes at the Italian Open.
Clay has not been as successful a surface as hard courts for Sinner, but he made improvements last year, taking the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz to a deciding set in the semifinal at Roland Garros.
Holger Rune will hope to add another clay court title to his collection after winning last week's 2025 Barcelona Open. It felt like a significant moment for him after a challenging and inconsistent last 18 months.
Stefanos Tsitsipas' prowess on clay is well known as a former French Open runner-up and three-time Monte Carlo Masters champion. The Greek is also on the entry list and one of the favorites for the title.
Andrey Rublev endured a slow start to his season on the dirt in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. The ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist has a big tournament in Madrid as the defending champion before playing at the Italian Open and the Hamburg Open.
The recent Monte Carlo Masters runner-up, Lorenzo Musetti, is another notable entrant on the list. He has made improvements on all surfaces, but probably still prefers playing on clay, the surface on which he grew up.
2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik should also boost ticket sales for the event. The 19-year-old became a worldwide name after managing a stunning victory against Novak Djokovic in the final in Miami.
Frances Tiafoe, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Tommy Paul, Sebastian Korda, and Gael Monfils are among the other names on the Hamburg Open entry list.
