Zverev Stunned By Sensational Davidovich Fokina In Toronto Thrashing

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina instructed Alexander Zverev towards Cincinnati with a stunning performance dismantling him in two simple sets at the 2023 Canadian Open in Toronto.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a very fascinating player capable of playing at an incredible level though he hits it pretty rarely. The Spaniard flashed his talent numerous times but rarely was he able to keep the level for multiple matches.

He won't think about that inconsistency issue after this match, though, as he'll be busy talking to the media, trying to explain what exactly happened. He played the first set as if he was one of the best players in the world, completely smashing Zverev with his incredible shot-making.

The German didn't really make it too hard on him with a very lacklustre serving performance that included three double faults and 0/7 on the second serve. Most of the damage came from Fokina's incredible play, though, as he posted 9 winners and only 1 unforced error in that 6-1 first-set beatdown.

The second set saw better serving from Zverev overall but he still largely struggled against the pristine shot-making from the Spaniard. It was odd seeing Zverev struggle so much, especially after the title run he had in Hamburg recently.

Davidovich Fokina took an early break in the second set as well and had no major issue holding his serve for the rest of the match. The final score ended up being 6-1 6-2, which is a superb win for the Spaniard, who will face Casper Ruud after the Norwegian survived a tricky encounter against Jiri Lehecka.

We need to give respect to Davidovich Fokina's stats as he posted 15 winners and only two unforced errors, which is an incredible line if you're familiar with his aggressive style of play that sees him go for some pretty crazy angles. On top of that, he had two aces and didn't face a single break point.
