Alexander Zverev will be playing in the fourth round of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome after beating J.J. Wolf in a rain-delayed match.
Only a couple of days ago, the illogical scheduling of the 2023 Italian Open was discussed in regard to Zverev's difficult schedule, and now the day has come when the tall German has to play two matches in one day.
On the day when Novak Djokovic advanced already to the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event in Rome, Alexander Zverev and J.J. Wolf played only their third-round match. Majority of it was played already on Monday, but it was suspended due to rain and continued on Pietrangeli on Tuesday.
The former world no. 2 was coming with a clear advantage on Tuesday, as he was able to win the first set yesterday. The German broke his opponent's serve once and it was enough to win the first set 6-4.
No one was coming with a one-break advantage when the match resumed, but Zverev came out firing early on, especially on his serve. The German won 12 of the last 14 rallies in the match and spent only a few minutes on the court to secure a 6-4, 7-5 win, and a spot in the fourth round of the 2023 Italian Open.
Up next, he will be taking on Daniil Medvedev. The two met recently in Monte Carlo in a fiery match after which Zverev called his opponent 'one of the most unfair players'. Medvedev was determined to confront the German about his claims and ahead of their fourth-round match in Rome it seems that everything may be fine. But that's yet to be seen as the two will clash later tonight.
