'Wrist Still Hurts': Korda Battling Pain Despite Achieving Best-Ever Masters Result In Shanghai

by Sebastian Dahlman

Sebastian Korda is having an amazing week at the 2023 Shanghai Masters as he's in the quarter-final but he's still dealing with some minor wrist problems.

Korda has dealt with a wrist problem for a while now, and it's been a thorn in his 2023 campaign that's been quite good outside of the injury woes. He's been playing a lot of tennis lately and doing some good things on the court, but the wrist issue still persists.

He admitted as much after his win over Francisco Cerundolo, where he barely escaped in two sets. He was quite lucky to do that after wasting a break in the second set, and the rest is needed because he still feels a bit of pain in the wrist even though, overall, it's getting better.

Yeah, for sure. It took a while. I wouldn't say it's fully behind me. There's still, my wrist hurts in certain situations, but day-to-day it's getting better. Hopefully, soon I'll be back to playing freely and a hundred percent again.

Korda on his persisting wrist problems

Wrist pain persistenting likely is caused by the tennis balls used in Shanghai. We've had players complain about it this week, including Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz, who are only the latest ones to add their names to formal complaints about the balls used.

Quite a few of them have spoken out about the balls, and many of them complained about wrist issues, including Korda, who admitted that he never had wrist issues before this year.

It's getting better, but having to play with these heavy balls certainly doesn't help him, even if his play on the court looks good.

He's hoping to extend his good play against Ben Shelton who just ousted Jannik Sinner. The winner advances to the semi-final which is a huge deal for both of them.
