Why is there clay leading up to the US Open swing…..
Nicholas Hilmy Kyrgios doesn't like clay and if you don't know that we'll present you with the latest evidence why that is.
It's not so much hate this time but more so a feeling of confusion for Kyrgios who skipped the..well, not really the entire clay season as he played in Houston on the surface early on. Traditionally he doesn't play on it because he doesn't like it. He didn't play at Roland Garros for a couple of years but will play next year because his girlfriend wants to see Paris and love is a strong motivator.
As an active member of the social media bubble, Kyrgios saw a post by the ATP Tour on Twitter with a graphic showing the top seed in Gstaad this week. The event is a longstanding one and has always been played on clay and Kyrgios had to ask the important questions.
He simply responded:
"Why is there clay leading up to the US Open swing.."
It's an interesting question because he's right. There is a pretty significant hard court swing coming up and players would be better suited practising and playing on that surface instead but this is how it always has been and probably won't change. Luckily, the entry is free so players can choose where to go and play.
