Iga Swiatek was asked about Novak Djokovic and she drew parallels between herself and the Serbian with their competitive nature.
The Polish superstar is one of the most competitive players on the Tour. Her tremendous desire to compete with others is what got her to the number one rank she still holds. She's won 4 Grand Slam trophies overall and is looking to win some more in the future, just like Novak Djokovic.
While she idolized Rafael Nadal growing up and still likes him the most, Swiatek is quite amazed by what others like Novak Djokovic have been able to do. She just likes his hunger to win even more, even after winning 23 Grand Slams, which she revealed in a recent interview.
It comes from the competitive spirit they both have, the desire to go out and win every match they play. It's something her father talked about a lot during a recent interview where he described Swiatek as very competitive since childhood.
You have to ask Novak (laughs). It seems to me that we have competition in our blood. When I play matches, I don't think about statistics and records. That was definitely his goal, but I'll admit it's always like we want to go out to the match to win it.
Like Djokovic, Swiatek too wants to win as much as she can and while numbers are not on her mind at the moment. They are great but fundamentally it's just about getting out there and winning the next match. Thinking about numbers can become far too distracting.
Regardless of which round it is or what tournament it is. In a way, if we as players thought about all these points, numbers, statistics, it would be much harder then. That's not why we play tennis to think about it.
We've seen it play out a few times, especially when Djokovic focused on the career Grand Slam a few years ago. One of the mentally strongest players ever crumbled under tremendous pressure, so treating every match as just a match and not some history-altering one makes sense.
