Noted tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou deems Novak Djokovic relatively beatable at this stage in his career, as Wimbledon showed.
While Djokovic was proven beatable at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, some things need to be said. It was world number one on the ATP Tour, Carlos Alcaraz who barely defeated him. In many ways, Alcaraz flirted with defeat as he almost lost his serve in the final set, and that would have probably been it.
So, Djokovic is beatable though it still takes a pretty darn good effort to really get it done. Mouratoglou spoke about the Wimbledon final on his social media page, where he analysed what went wrong for each player. According to the French coach, Alcaraz played more freely, and that's why he won.
The reason why Carlos won the Wimbledon final, I believe is because he felt free to go for his shots in the big moments and Novak didn’t. It was a very mental match and both of the guys get tense.
I mean a Grand Slam final has to be mental, for sure. And I think the best image is this tiebreak in the second set, and he (Djokovic) has this backhand and he hits the net. He could have killed the match and he didn’t.
The coach further explained why he feels Djokovic is very beatable at this part of his career, and part of that is the tremendous pressure of further creating history. Alcaraz doesn't have the same pressure though he had plenty at Roland Garros and failed to win the match. After all, both players are human, and it showed both in Paris and London.
I think in the situation he is now, he is really beatable in those matches because of the weight of history. I feel that being this ultimate favourite all the time and playing for history – it has to be a burden. I don’t think Carlos has an edge on Novak.
I think, he beat him in a Grand Slam final, Novak beat him in Roland Garros. So I think both players are very close in terms of level. I think Novak can play much better than what he he did in the final. I think he was very nervous. He has to be able to play more free.
